Invention of the Day - Microwaves

Microwaves

In 1945 the specific heating effect of a high-power microwave beam was accidentally discovered by Percy Spence an American self taught engineer from Howland, Maine. Employed by Raytheon at the time he noticed that microwaves from an active radar set he was working on started to melt a candy bar he had in his pocket. Spencer was and orphan at a young age. Although he never graduated from grammar school he became senior vice president and a member of the board or directors at Raytheon, receiving 150 patents during his career. Because of his accomplishments, Spence was awarded the distinguished service medal by the U.S. Navy and had a building named after him at Raytheon.
