Invention of the Day - Hovercrafts

Hovercrafts

In 1959 Sir Christopher Sydney Cockerell was an English engineer, best known as ‘the inventor of hovercraft’. A cushion of air supporting the craft just about the ground of water. Vertical fans propel the craft. Most a re powered by gas turbine or diesel engines. Hovercrafts travel at speeds up to 160km per hour. They are used a marine ferries and as military vehicles.

Cockerell built several models of his hovercraft design in the 1950’s, featuring an engine mounted to blow from the front of the craft into space below it. He demonstrated the model flying over many Whitehall carpets.
